The fire end
Front-loading door with ceramic glass, a 60 × 40 cm cast iron plate, and a swing-away grate that clears the lid. The flue draws hard enough to keep smoke off the water.
One firebox, two jobs. The same fire that brings 1,500 litres up to 38 °C runs the grill plate while you wait.
Hardwood burns in a sealed steel box beside the tub. Heat rises through the cast iron plate above it, and a stainless jacket wrapped around it carries hot water into the spa by convection — no pump, no power.
Light it once and both paths run off the same load of wood.
The firebox, the plate and the water jacket share a single welded frame, so the heat that would normally go up the flue goes into dinner or into the tub.

42 mm thermally modified cedar staves on powder-coated steel bands, an insulated lid, and a 50 mm drain. Fill it with a garden hose; it holds heat overnight.
From cold water to sitting in it, on about 25 kg of dry hardwood — three or four armloads.
Paper, kindling, two splits. Close the door and leave it alone — the water starts moving on its own within ten minutes, and keeps climbing for the next three hours.
Cast iron over a direct flame is at searing heat within half an hour, so dinner happens long before the water is ready.
38 °C with embers still going. Top the firebox up once and it will hold temperature for the rest of the night.
